Tournament Recap and their road to victory:
Bowlers across New England descended upon East Providence Lanes for the 2025 East Coast Sports Investors Doubles presented by Bloomfield Electric. With 80 teams in play, all bidding for one of the 16 match play positions, it was sure to be a day of managing ball reaction. The pattern was the 2023 SYC Rhode Island Long pattern, which earned its name by sporting 46ft, 28.55 mL, and a 4.17:1 ratio. Tournament leaders after qualifying were none other than Nathan DeMello and Aaron Major, who had been fresh off their trio's victory the day prior. Their score led the day with +349, while getting into match play took +233 from the teams of Malik Grove, Chris Viale, and NEBA Hall of Famers Scott Santos and Jon Van Hees. Alex Aguiar and Mike Rose, Jr would be the cut number for their 9 a.m. attempt at +237.
Round 1 of the finals showed hot rounds from Frank Bachard and Tom Solimine (536) and the Major/DeMello duo (513). Both teams moved on, as well as eventual champions Aguiar and Rose, as they eliminated their first opponents, Tyler Sudell and Brandon Whitney (436-366). In round 2 we would see Alex and Mike topple the team of Pete Fox and John McGuire with a 447-388 win. Their semi-final match would be against Bachard and Solimine, while Tom Coco and Nick Perrone, who just dispatched the Forry/Hartbarger team with a 12-pin victory, would face Tyler Perry and Tom DeCarlo. Both matches remained close throughout and mimicked each other in scoring pace. Coco and Perrone would punch their ticket to the finals with a 447-413 victory, while Alex and Mike sent the team of Solimine and Bachard packing with their 443-413 win.
The Championship match:
This brings us to the Coco/Perrone vs Aguiar/Rose finals. With a win, Nick Perrone and Mike Rose look to capture their 1st titles while Tom adds a 3rd to his list, and Alex stacks an impressive 29th title on top of his accolades. Early on in the match, we saw a hot start from Nick throwing the first 5 strikes and Coco adding a few of his own. This, accompanying some carry issues along with a few splits, put Alex and Mike in a deficit going into the back half of the game. Heading into the 6th frame, we see the tides begin to shift with Perrone leaving a pocket 8-10. This proved to be a critical open when the NEBA Hall of Famer, Alex Aguiar, stepped up for a 4-bagger in frames 5 through 8 while 4-time eagle winner and USBC Hall of Famer, Mike Rose, added a few hits and filled frames of his own. As we came down to the final 2 frames, it would appear to be a 1-pin match. Mike would show his incredible touch to win the 9th frame bout with his opponent across the board who would see a split open. The match continued to swing in favor of Aguiar and Rose when Tom Coco also put up a split in the 9th. The final frame would wrap this battle in a bow, with Mike filling his 10th and Alex delivering the fatal blow with a strike. When the dust settled, Mike and Alex would walk away with a 431-404 victory and the East Coast Sports Investors Doubles title. This was the 1st title for Mike Rose Jr., while Alex added his 29th title, bringing him just three titles away from being WNBA’s all-time title holder behind Mike Lichstein(32).
Aguiar and Rose’s team took home $2,300 for their win and paid entries to the Tournament of Champions, while Coco and Perrone’s team was awarded $1,600 for their efforts. Congratulations to all our finalists on their performances.
A Message from the Champion:
MIKE ROSE JR.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to East Providence Lanes for hosting this tournament. Mike and his staff did an excellent job, ensuring the event ran smoothly and efficiently. I also want to thank NEBA for conducting such a well-organized and professional tournament. The NEBA staff is always welcoming and gracious, and I truly appreciate their efforts. I am honored and delighted to have earned my first NEBA title.
A highlight of the weekend was reconnecting with so many friends from throughout my years of bowling, especially my close friend and partner, Alex Aguiar. Alex and I have known each other for many years, and it was a privilege to contribute to his remarkable 29th NEBA title. He is, without a doubt, one of my favorite bowlers to watch. I hope we have the opportunity to return next year and defend our title.
Thank you again to the NEBA organization. I am thrilled to now be a part of the NEBA title club.”
